I’m a Collector

Though I’ve been labelled a packrat and, “gasp” a hoarder. I’ve been a collector (not a hoarder – for the record) of interesting items for more than 40 years. I’ve also been using storage just as long.

I have no plans to give up being a collector anytime soon.

In the earliest days and before commercial storage I had rented storage space in old shipping containers. And that was a step up from the space I used to rent. In old barns. Storage spaces have come a long way thankfully.

In those days if you had visited me you would’ve seen lots of auto parts, art, film props, power tools and hardware. And that’s just naming a few. If at some point it was of use to someone I probably collected it.

And eventually as with all things I resold everything. Collections never really end though. Once you sell them off they simply begin a new life with someone else. Just one of the things I learned along the way.

Over the years I’ve used storage units mostly as warehousing for my inventory. But they evolved into much more. Mostly out of necessity.

At times they were my workshop for emergency repairs to collectibles. They also served as a backdrop to take the classified Ad photographs. They even acted as my showroom for those anxious buyers.

As the internet grew so did outlets to trade in collectibles. Sites such as Kijiji, Craigslist and Ebay appeared. The global sure reach made things a whole lot easier. But it wasn’t without it’s downsides either.

Over the years I’ve gotten to know the online selling platforms pretty well. And I’ll be passing along my favorite tips for dealing with all of them. Most recently I’ve written an article, “How to take Ad Photos”.

It’s been amazing chatting with other collector types too.

So here I find myself years later. That’s where this website comes into the picture.

Regardless of the type of collector you are this site is dedicated to you.

My goal is to provide solid information to make it more enjoyable. And if you find it to also be profitable well even better.

I named this site after one of my very first collectibles. A ceramic figurine of a smoking monkey.

Though at the time the term collectible didn’t mean a thing to me. For me that monkey was simply the coolest.

It cost a single dime and came with it’s own pack of little cigarettes. Once lit they burned and puffed out a succession of tiny smoke rings. It was pure magic.

No warning labels about playing with matches either. That would be unheard of for toys today.

This site is always developing so enjoy as I continue to build. I have much more in store for you. Look around and explore the site. If you find something of interest feel free to bookmark it.

Whether you’re a dedicated collector or a still-thinking-about-it collector I hope you find the content useful. If you have a collection you’d like to showcase on the SmokinMonkey I hope you’ll drop me a line.
